Google Android 3.0 & Google Music Service Coming This Winter?

Article first published as Google Android 3.0 & Google Music Service Coming This Winter? on Technorati.

A lot of Android owners out there are probably wondering when Android 3.0 & Google’s streaming music service will be available.

Well, according to an interview with Android Product Manager Gaurav Jain conducted by Israeli financial newspaper Calcalist, the next version of the Android operating system, Android 3.0 (code named Gingerbread) will be available in the US during this coming holiday season.

Google’s Streaming Music service, which is also due to be released along side the Android 3.0 launch, was also mentioned in the interview. During Google I/O 2010, Vic Gundontra, VP of Engineering for Google, demoed Android 2.2's  (Froyo) capability to stream iTunes music to Android.

For those you that don't know what Google’s Music service is, it’s a push-to-phone service that allows users to go to Google’s Android Market from your Mac or PC, search for a song, and have it downloaded over-the-air to your handset.

A company called mspot has already created an application for Android 2.1 that allows you to upload your iTunes music library to their servers and stream it to your Android 2.1 handset. Apple is expected to launch its own cloud-based version of iTunes later this year. It will be interesting to see which company will be able to do music streaming to handset’s better.

Intel plans to put Android on Atom powered smartphones

According to PCWorld Intel has a big plan for the Google Android mobile operating system. The company has already ported Android to smart phones using the companies Atom based processors. According to the article Renee James general manager of Intel’s software and services group has stated, “Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones”.  Intel is doing this to get the Atom processor into smart phones in a market that is dominated by microprocessors from Arm Holdings. Google Android was originally created to be used on smart phones running on ARM processors. But since the mobile operating system is open-source, companies will be able to change it in order to run on other processors.

While this would mean much faster & powerful smart phones, I am wondering  if this would create fragmentation in the processor market for smart phones. And if it would affect application developers. So what do you guys/gals think would it create a processor speed race between ARM & Intel? And would having two microprocessor’s powering Android create issues for application developers?

Cricket plans on offering a Google Android Smart phone

Well this is good for the people that use Cricket Wireless, which is a subsidiary of Leap wireless.  The company just announced a joint venture with Texas based Pocket Communications. The cellular service provider is planning on launching a Blackberry device as well as a smart phone running Google Android. Now it didn’t say which Google Android handset they would have. Both Cricket Wireless and Pocket Communications offer unlimited talk for $25 a month and unlimited talk and web from $40-$45 a month. So tell me what do you think of a low cost pre-paid cell service provider offering Google Android handsets?

All US Android handsets could get Android 2.1

First off I do want to apologize to my readers I recently got a job and I haven’t been able to keep up with all the latest tech news. According to androidandme’s website all the Android handsets in the USA could be getting updated to Android 2.1, now this is from an anonymous source. Not all the handsets will have the same version that is currently running on the Nexus One.  Each handset may be missing features such as live wallpaper, but the handsets will still have Android 2.1 in the firmware settings. Also some of the handset will need to be wiped in order to update to Android 2.1, except for the Motorola Droid since it’s currently running Android 2.0.1.  The update would be going through a PC-based install in order to upgrade to Android 2.1. By doing a PC-based installed this would backup the phone during the update and keep from damaging the phone and making it unusable. The Android 2.1 update is scheduled the second quarter of 2010; Sprint’s Android handsets are going to be in early second quarter, G1 & Mytouch 3G users are supposed to be the first set handsets to get the update.

Well if this is true this would be great I know that G1 is still a fairly popular handset along with the Mytouch 3G.  But am still a little skeptical on how they would have Android 2.1 on the G1, since it’s has such limited memory. I know the new version of the Mytouch 3G has more memory and am sure Android 2.1 has a lot to do with it.  Well tell me what to do you think of this rumored update?

Google Android gains 4.7% of worldwide smart phone sales

Well since the first Google Android handset came on to the smart phone market in 2008 with the T-Mobile G1. The mobile operating system has managed to be put on smart phones from HTC, Samsung & Motorola. According to Canalys a high tech analysis company has put up their worldwide smart phone market share from Apple, Microsoft, RIM, Symbian & Google. Google has shipped 7,786,870 devices & has gain 4.7% of overall smart phone sales worldwide.

That’s impressive to have gained that much market share worldwide over the course of a year. So what do you think 2011 will bring Google Android?
