Adobe Pulls the Plug On Flash For Mobile.

If Steve Jobs were alive today am sure he would be laughing at the news that Adobe is no longer supporting Flash on mobile platforms. Instead Adobe is putting more effort behind HTML5. HTML5 stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, which is a language that is used to create websites, the fifth iteration of it allows for browsers to play video and audio on websites.  Having Adobe focus more on HTML5 for mobile devices would make sense considering HTML5 is supported on majority of mobile devices. Adobe will be working closely with other companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft and Research In Motion, who are also big supporters of HTML5, in order to bring more innovation to mobile web browsers. Adobe will continue to release security updates for existing versions of Flash for devices.

Flash 10.1 could come to Android in 2H 2010

Adobe has showed Flash 10.1 on the Nexus One and the Motorola Droid in their Adobe Developer videos. During an interview with Fox Business, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen stated “We have a number of excited partners who are working aggressively with us to bring Flash to their devices, whether they be smartphones as well as handsets, and so companies like Google or RIM or Palm are going to be releasing version of Flash on smartphones and tablets in the second half of the year.”

The only handsets that are able to run Flash 10.1 is the Nexus One & Motorola Droid in the USA. And since Adobe has said that Flash 10.1 will be coming to Android in the 1st quarter & then the 2nd quarter of this year before, I guess we will have to wait and see if Adobe will come through this time.

Adobe Air coming to Android.

Well I do apologize to my readers since I have recently been employed it’s been a little hard to keep up with the announcements during the Mobile World Congress.  Adobe has made an announcement during MWC that they are preparing a mobile version of Adobe Integrated Runtime for both Flash & Web applications outside of the web browser. Adrian Ludwig Adobe’s marketing director for the Flash platform stated, “Our goal is to provide a consistent runtime that spans devices, inclusive of mobile and desktop operating systems. “ For instance someone that uses the Adobe Air application on the desktop should be able to use that application on a mobile device. Below is a demo video to get a better understanding of Adobe Air running on Android.

Flash 10.1 will need enhanced versions of Android to run.

A lot of people including myself are wondering about Adobe Flash on the Android platform. The Engadeget website was able to get in contact with Adobe and inquired about the matter. According to the website Adrian Ludwig the group product manager for Flash stated this:

Adobe, Google, and other members of the Open Screen Project are working together to make ensure the full Web experience can be delivered on largest possible number of devices. Support for full Flash Player 10.1 requires some enhancements to existing versions of Android. These enhancements are expected to be available as an upgrade to existing devices and for new devices starting in Q2 2010.

The statement suggests that the current versions of Google Android will have to be updated in order to support Flash 10.1.  Now Android versions 2.0 & 2.1 have been shown by Adobe’s Developer videos to be able to run Flash 10.1. But as for the older versions of Android 1.5 & 1.6 is still up in their air in regards to Flash support.
